Demystifying the Greenhouse Misting System

Green House Misting System imageMore and more people are discovering the benefits of installing a green house misting system. The systems come in two distinct flavours: manual and automatic, and there is nothing to choose between them in terms of sales volume. There are good reasons for taking a look at both systems before you make your decision. As you might expect, it comes down to a question of pitching your greenhouse’s needs against your own budget. Surprisingly, though, the cheaper solution is more likely to suit the more avid gardener – or at least the gardener with more spare time to devote to green house gardening. But first, there are a few pros and cons to ruminate over.

Manual Misting or Automatic for the People?

Just as in a car's transmission system, there are two basic types of green house misting systems to choose between:

  1. manual
  2. automatic

These systems each have certain things to recommend them to the purchaser, and it would be good to know as much as you can about both of them before you make your final decision. The manual green house misting system is the basic system from which the automatic system has been developed, so it makes sense for us to start by considering the basic system before working our way to the more complicated system.

Simplicity is the Watchword

The manual green house misting system is simplicity itself. The system is plumbed into the water mains, and turned off and on as needed. This is one of the main benefits, as with any simple system, there is much less to go wrong. It also puts you as the gardener in closer control of the system if the watering needs adjusting. You can choose the duration the system runs and control the flow rate. The inherent simplicity also makes the manual greenhouse misting system the usual choice for those on a limited budget, as initial costs are lower. However, there is nothing stopping you adding automation at a later date as budget dictates.

Complexity for Comfort

An automatic green house misting system, is more complicated, but successfully takes a lot of needless worry and responsibility away from the gardener. These systems can be set to operate on a variable timer, or to utilize a monitor that triggers the misters when the humidity or water content in the planters drops below a predetermined level. Clearly this set up will save you, the gardener, substantial time and effort. Of course, this extra functionality comes at a cost, both in terms of budget and reliability. The automation can sometimes be difficult to override if you need to adjust the system to cope with particular situations.

The Final Demisty-fying Word

These are not the only factors to consider when you’re out hunting for the best green house misting system. Capacity, flow rate and efficiency also play a part. However, as a rule, the simpler manual system will be cheaper to buy and cheaper to run, but will cost you more in terms of time. If you are a gardener lucky enough to spend a good deal of time pursuing your favourite past-time, the manual system should be just the ticket. On the other hand, if you struggle to find enough time to indulge your green fingers, setting up an automatic misting system will save you and your plants a lot of hassle. In short, you have to pay for the greenhouse to look after itself in your absence.
